LONGEVITY– IMMUNITY

The only organic certified & UK-native functional mushroom producer.

Oysters are an unsung hero in medicinal fungi. They have been prized for centuries for their nutritional value and delicious taste, with large amounts of ergothioneine, ergosterol, and l-methionine. This mushroom offers great antioxidant benefits and research also suggests they could be anti-inflammatory and even help support our brains as we age!

In TCM, oyster mushrooms are recommended for “relaxation of muscles, joints and tendons, to strengthen circulation, and to increase kidney function”. They have a dense polysaccharide composition and studies have explored its immunomodulatory and prebiotic capacities.

  • Antioxidant powerhouse

Oyster mushrooms are rich in flavonoids and phenolics – antioxidants that reduce or prevent cell damage in your body by fighting free radicals (substances linked to diseases like cancer). A 2020 rodent study observed that Pleurotus extract helped reduce liver damage caused by toxic chemicals and cell oxidation, though more research in humans is needed.

    Ergothioneine

Ergothioneine is an amino acid with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is found mainly in mushrooms as well as red and black beans. Ergothioneine is called the “longevity vitamin” and is often used to mitigate diseases associated with aging, including cardiovascular disease, joint pain, cancer, liver disease, cataracts, and Alzheimer’s disease though this evidence is mostly anecdotal. A 2016 test-tube study found that the ergothioneine present in grey oyster mushroom (Pleurotus pulmonarius) extract inhibited oxidative damage to human artery cells and prevented oxidation of LDL cholesterol.

    Vitamin B Boost

Oysters are rich in B vitamins: riboflavin, niacin, and pantothenic acid, the combination helping to protect heart health. Riboflavin is good for red blood cells, niacin is good for the digestive system and for maintaining healthy skin, and pantothenic acid is good for the NS and helps the body produce essential hormones.

    Etymology

The generic name Pleurotus is Latin for ‘side ear’ and refers to the lateral attachment of the stem; ostreatus is a reference to oysters, as the fruitbodies often resemble oyster shells.

    Folklore

Oysters are one of the most widely cultivated mushrooms as they are easy to grow and aren’t too picky about what they’ll eat. We grow ours on oak and beech wood, but they are also carnivorous, feasting on nematodes and killing them using a nerve gas. Due to their ability to digest a diversity of substrates, they are used in the field of myco-remediation to break down toxic chemicals and nuclear waste, cleaning up as they breakdown.
